Honest Employment

He worked as a ditch-digger most of his life,
To care for his children, his home and his wife,
It was honest employment and all was so right,
It was honest employment for him.

Honest employment without any strife,
Honest employment the rest of his life,
Nothing was easy, but all things were right,
It was honest employment for him.

He thought he was happy with things that he had,
Though nothing came easy, his life was not bad,
His home and his children both made him quite glad,
It was honest employment for him.

Honest employment without any strife,
Honest employment the rest of his life,
Nothing was easy, but all things were right,
It was honest employment for him.

His friends came to see him and told him to come,
They said they had plans that would reap a large sum,
They finally convinced him with bottles of rum,
Dishonest employment for him.

Dishonest employment in robbing a store,
He thought they had plenty, but they wanted more,
They figured a bank was the thing they should score,
Dishonest employment for him.

Honest employment, a thing of the past,
Dishonest employment, the mold had been cast,
"One little job and we'll make it the last",
Dishonest employment for him.

They never quite got to the bank from the store,
For they were surrounded by cops, by the score,
When they were arrested, they cursed and they swore,
Dishonest employment for him.

Dishonest employment, a thing of the past,
Now time in a prison, a thing that will last,
Just twenty more years, it will never go fast,
It's honest employment for him.

Honest employment from 'twenty to life',
No longer at home with his children and wife,
A life filled with loneliness, sorrow and strife,
It's honest employment for him.
