And They Sang

And they sang "Old Time Religion" and they sang "Amazing Grace",
And they sang with arms uplifted and a smile upon each face,
They were simple country people, but they trusted in the Lord,
And I bowed my head when they began to sing.

"Send the light, the blessed Gospel light,
Let it shine from shore to shore,
Send the light, the blessed Gospel light,
Let it shine forever more."

There was nothing big and fancy in the way they sang the song,
Though the sound was quite enriching, there were times they sang it wrong,
But the Spirit was among them and the Lord was in this place,
And I knelt in prayer when they began to sing.

"Send the light, the blessed Gospel light,
Let it shine from shore to shore,
Send the light, the blessed Gospel light,
Let it shine forever more."

God's anointing was upon them as they sang that simple tune,
And the way that I was feeling, I just knew that very soon,
I'd be standing there among them and be lifting up my voice,
And be joining them in worship as they sang.

"Send the light, the blessed Gospel light,
Let it shine from shore to shore,
Send the light, the blessed Gospel light,
Let it shine forever more."

And I didn't want to leave there, but I knew that it was time,
I would love to stay forever, for the feeling was sublime,
As I walked away, the echo of their voices followed me,
And I once again would hear them as they sang.

"Send the light, the blessed Gospel light,
Let it shine from shore to shore,
Send the light, the blessed Gospel light,
Let it shine forever more."
